Art is really in the whispers.

– Duane Michals

It’s the gray/brown winter of the Great American Midwest. Mostly a time for me to hibernate and look at what other artists are working on.

Occasionally, the dull clouds of the St. Louis skies part and I’m able to get out in the cold and look for my next opportunity.

I created these five images on days when I was excited by the possibilities of making new photos and found the lighting and timing to be just right. I’m being more selective about my work, especially when considering why I’m releasing the shutter.

Our local public broadcast station, Nine Network of Public Media, chose selected images from my book, Larry Torno Photo: Volume Two, to be a part of the January 16 broadcast of Living St. Louis. I was honored to be invited to participate in the show and am thankful to producer Ruth Ezell for her kind words and beautiful presentation.

In honor of the make-believe birthday of Barbie, America’s iconic doll, I am producing a new book called Larry Torno Photo: Volume Three. The issue will be released in March and features: photos from the 2009 exhibition, When Is A Doll Not A Doll, select images from the NeoClassically Barbie series, some observations of off-the-shelf Thrift Store Dolls, a study of a throwback 1959 Classic doll, and of course, an exploration of Nudes.

Look for more details to come on my Facebook page, Larry Torno Photo, and in the upcoming March 5th blog post.

Shoot what you can’t help but shoot.

2 0 1 6 :  T H E  Y E A R  I N  R E V I E W

I spent the year looking.

Looking at the light.

Looking at the shadows.

Looking at things I had seen before.

Looking at things I hadn’t seen before.

Looking at everything.

Then I found it.

I found myself.

I found my voice.

I found how to express everything
I’ve learned in the past 40 years
of art school, gallery visits,
a graphic design career,
and endless observations.

To me these are private moments.

Personal experiences.

Things I know are important.

Things I want to share with others.

Things I want people to see.

To understand.

To discover.

.  .  .  To hear me.

You do the work and ignore the rest.
Then, after a lot of time, you have your work,
and you’ve ignored the rest.

Volume Two includes forty-two recent black and white images created in the past four months, along with a few photos selected from the archives.

I put a great deal of myself in this new direction and am very excited about the work represented. I feel like things are falling into place and I am reaching a point where my individual style is emerging.

I started to draft you an email telling you about my favorite photo from the new series but I simply can’t because I love them all Larry! You’re a master in seeing and capturing light, shape, texture and humor. You deserve every compliment that comes your way. I think you’ve definitely found your groove.   – Lynn

Opening July 7 at Station Independent Projects in New York City.

I’m pleased to announce that my photo, Barber and Beauty, was selected to appear in the upcoming Station Independent Projects exhibition, WE: AMEricans. Curator Ruben Natal-San Miguel created a show of established photographers alongside emerging talent.

Ruben’s vision for the show is defined as “WE: AMEricans – who we truly are as Americans: people, objects and places from all walks of life, from this great nation, currently challenged by a climate of racism, anger, political tensions and disparaging, the highest income and social inequality, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, police brutality, and terrorism.”

If you’re in NYC between July 7 and August 16, 2016, stop by Station Independent Projects gallery and visit the show.

THANK YOU Ruben for the opportunity to exhibit my work.

I have an ongoing portfolio of images that I create that fall into the exploratory category of “sketchbook”. It’s a place for me to flesh out ideas and see what I like, where I’ve succeeded and where I’ve failed. Most of all, it’s a place to shoot everything I see and learn more about myself and my art.

Following are some of the current items in the Sketchbook that caught my eye, and made me take note of my observations.
